The town of Oban is in the Scottish Highlands, on the northwestern coast, and is the gateway to the Scottish Isles, with ferries to several of the isles, and to the Outer Hebrides. The town is considered to be somewhat of a drinking capital, and since it is home to the famous Oban whiskey too, that is no great surprise. In the summer, the town can be reached by Loch Lomond Sea Plane, from Glasgow. Alternatively, there are boats, ferries, trains on the West Highland Line from Glasgow, and buses by Scottish Citylink. McCaig’s Tower, also known as McCaig’s Folly, is a tower built on a hill overlooking the Oban Bay. It is a bit of a walk up the hill, but the tower provides a great view of the bay and the town itself. There are also two castles, Dunollie and Dunstaffnage, which are near the town. The former is simply a walk to the end of the bay, while the latter is around three miles from town. Make sure that you visit the Oban Distillery while you are in town, as well as the War and Peace Museum, and the nearby Scottish Sealife Sanctuary. Another interesting way to spend a day is to take one of the entertaining murder mystery trails through town, and it’s also a great way to see the place!
