The village is built in such a way that it seems to cling to the sides of the steep cliffs that characterize the area. Oia is believed to be the most photographed place in Greece. It has picturesque architecture which includes a blend of large medieval Venetian as well as small in-cave village homes. Most of the structures are whitewashed so that the whole village looks sparkling white and is only highlighted by blue domes of churches and green plants. Tourists may also visit the Maritime Museum which was once a 19th century mansion that was restored and transformed into a museum. You can find old and new models of ships, chests, old maritime equipment and unusual photographs.
The sunset at Oia is definitely worth seeing. In fact, locals and tourists gather at the old castle just to witness the magnificent sunset. Some scenes in movies like Summer Lovers and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants were shot in Oia.
