Once there, it is a good idea to rent a car to get to the smaller places, or another great option is to cycle to see the beautiful scenery and to meet the very friendly locals. There are many things to see and do in Oita, so you definitely won’t be bored. Stone Buddhas in Bunga Takada is said to be where Buddhism and Shintoism fused in Japan. You can also experience a farm stay in the same area where the landscape and rice fields have kept the same natural scenery in tact for the past 800 years. Oita is said to have the largest output of hot spring water and there are all types of hot springs, from sand, to mud and to so hot that they can only be viewed. Beppu and Yufu are the main hot spring locations. Mukuma River in Hita, offers a pleasure boat which operates all year round. Here, you can eat dinner in perfect Japanese style on a “yakata bune” equipped with paper lanterns, tatami mats, servers wearing traditional kimonos, men rowing the boats and specialty fish caught by birds. Two kinds of mackerel, Seki-aji and Seki-saba, which are caught in the swift currents of the Hoyo Channel, are expensive but exquisite. The local fish sashimi is also exceptional here, and tempura chicken and dango jiru (rice dumpling udon soup), are both local specialties. - Browse the Oita Map or compare Oita accommodation from Hotels, Motels, B&Bs, Lodging & Hostels to Holiday & Caravan Parks.
