Okayama, with a population of about 700,000 people, is a major transit hub for western Japan, and with its white beaches, brooding black castle and the famous Korakuen Garden, makes it an interesting place to explore. Plane, train and bus are the ways to reach Okayama, and, once there, you will use trams and buses to get around the city. Korakuen Garden, is beautiful, with waterfalls, tiny shrines, teahouses, miniature maple forests, a lotus pond and a greenhouse filled with orchids and cacti. Another notable feature are the rare red-crested white cranes that are released for flying exhibitions on special occasions throughout the year. Okayama Castle, popularly known as Crow Castle because it has been painted a striking black, and has a museum in the tower which documents the castle’s history. The best museums to visit are Okayama Orient Museum, Okayama Prefectural Museum, Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art, Hayashibara Museum of Art and Yumeji Art Museum. These are all worth a visit. In the north-eastern part of the city is the Kibiji District where there is a cycling route for sightseeing. The sights you will visit, in the order that you will see them, are Kibitsuhiko Shrine, Kibitsu Shrine, Kibi Cultural Properties Centre, Koikui Shrine, Tsukuriyama Ancient Burial Mounds, Komori-zuka Burial Mound, Okayama Prefectural Kibiji Museum and the Bitchu Kokubunji Temple. Truly a day full of sightseeing that will satisfy any visitor. If that isn’t enough, there are many, many more in and around the area to choose from. There are also numerous gardens in and around the city, which offer garden lovers scenery of spectacular beauty, where you can also enjoy a relax at a hot rock spring. Ikeda Zoo offers the usual zoo animals like elephants, tigers lions, giraffe and a variety of birds and monkeys as well as unique animals such as tapirs and red pandas. If you would like to spend the day having a picnic, then a visit to the Kubo Fruit Farm is the place to go. Here you can see how grapes are grown and harvested and you are permitted to eat as much as you like. You will also see the harvesting of shiitake mushrooms, persimmons, sweet potatoes and chestnuts. Visitors are also permitted to picnic and camp on the farm. Festivals to look out for are the Naked Man Festival, the Cherry Blossom Festival and the Momotaro Festival.
