Ooty is known for its productive tea industry and a trip to one of its tea plantations will prove quite interesting. The Ooty Botanical Gardens built in 1847 features over 650 unique plant species and a 20 million year old tree fossil. The Mudumalai Forest Sanctuary and Doddabetta Peak which gives excellent views of the town can also be visited. The Ooty Rose Gardens and Sims Park are great places for picnicking and relaxation. Other popular areas include the picturesque Hidden Valley and Echo Rock.

For amusement, Ooty has many good cinemas, clubs, bars and restaurants, as well as shops where you can stock up on Indian goods. The Ganapathy and Liberty Theatres offer lively cultural performances. A number of exciting cultural and non-cultural events are kept annually. Summer is the time for many folk dance events, flower and fruit shows, boat races, dog shows and fashion parades. Thaipoosam in the Elk Hill Marugan Temple and the Bookkapuram Mariamman Annual Festival are held in February. The popular Ooty Mariamman Temple Festival can be enjoyed in May.
