It is the easternmost city in the state and is a deep-water port to the Gulf of Mexico. It has a population of 18,643, based on the Census of 2000 but its history indicates that the area had once been inhabited by more than 60,000 residents.

The area was first called as Green’s Bluff in honor of Resin Green who arrived there before 1830. However, the name was changed to Madison, in 1840, in honor of President James Madison. This caused confusion especially with the post office because there is another town in Texas named Madisonville. By 1858, the name was changed to Orange as tribute to the orange groves that attract passing boatmen.

Today, Orange is a highly industrialized area well known for manufacturing rubber products, petrochemical products, paper products, ships, and other industries. Aside from providing its residents with numerous employment opportunities, the city also continues to grow but hold on to its world-class culture and offer recreation and shopping opportunities not only to residents but to tourists as well.
