There are around thirty three thousand people who live in the town, and although tourism is a growing industry in the area, the city still retains its age-old industries of fishing and farming. The town has been around for a long time, but it was only in 1070 that it became an important site in the Italian defense against the Saracens. The Tower of St Christophoros, which is a part of the original city wall, is one of the main sights in the town, and the churches of St Mary’s Cathedral and the Church of St Francis of Assisi also date to the 12th and 13th centuries respectively, and are well worth seeing. Make sure that you are in Oristano around the time of the Mardi Gras, as it is then that the five hundred year old festival known as Sa Sartiglia takes place.
