If you’re interested in history be sure to visit Jamtlans Lans Museum which has an indoor and outdoor arena and showcases historical buildings portraying the lives of peasants and city life hundreds of years ago. It also contains an interesting set of tapestries with Norse, Christian and Viking imagery. Froso Church is worth a treat for the eyes and it dates back to the 12th century.
Not so historically minded? There is always the zoo that not only houses many exotic animals but also has an amusement park. If you like animals in a more natural and less captive environment you can visit the Moose Garden where tame moose walk around and let you touch them.
In the city itself there are quite a few art galleries and museums of all sorts albeit tiny. Small shops are found when exploring on foot and this is a good idea as everything is really within walking distance. There are a lot of cafe’s, bars, pubs and nightclubs and the city has quite a lively nightlife.
On the outdoor front there are activities aplenty. As Ostersund is on a lake you can expect the usual fishing, boating, canoeing, bathing and such. As Ostersund is in Sweden you can expect the usual skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling in winter. Other activities include hiking, cycling, horseback riding and golf to mention a few. There are also a few events held throughout the year for instance The Great Lake Festival During July where international artists are featured, The Christmas Festival and The Winter Festival with music and lights and skiing.
