or Oulu accommodation? Oulu or “Ule River Fort” is a city and municipality in the province of Oulu and the region of Northern Ostrobothnia, in Finland. It is the largest city in Northern Finland and the sixth largest city in the country. Its population rate of growth is almost comparable to that of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. This coastal city is the information center for technology and a good base for visits farther north. There are several small islands to visit in the area especially "Hailuoto Island" which is home to an open-air museum, a lovely old lighthouse, beautiful parks, other museums and some old churches. Liminka is just south of Oulu, and has the Liminganlahti Bird Sanctuary, which manages to attract more bird species than anywhere else in Finland. The town of Raahe is also good for a nice day trip with its quaint Old Town of about 200 wooden buildings; a marketplace and Pekka Square with its 19th-century buildings. It also has the Raahe Museum which was founded in 1862, and is the oldest museum in Finland, with displays illustrating the history of shipping and trade. If driving up from the south, consider stopping in the town of Paltaniemi, near Kajaani, to see the 18th-century church and the adjoining Czar’s Stables. Oulu is 330 mi or 530 km north of Helsinki so a trip to Helsinki is also possible from the city.
