or Owatonna accommodation? Owatonna, the county seat of Steele County, Minnesota, United States, was first settled around Straight River around 1853. The real meaning and the reason behind the use of “Owatonna” as the town’s name is unknown; however, the city administration concocted a “legend” to attract the tourists to the town.
The legend is printed at Mineral Springs Park – Chief Wabena’s daughter Princess Owatonna fell so ill that she could not even lift her head to drink water. Hearing that the town’s waters have curative powers, the Chief asked for the water. After the Princess drank the water, she was healed. So, the town was named after her.
Attractions in Owatonna include the State School Museum, the National Farmers Bank – now the Wells Fargo Bank – which is on the National Register of Historic Places, Owatonna Arts Center/Sculpture Garden, the State Orphanage Museum which is the only one in Minnesota, and the scenic Hidden Creek Golf Club.
