Parkersburg Accommodation

One of the agencies of the US Treasury Department – the Bureau of Public Debt – has its headquarters in the city.

Parkersburg was originally called Newport in the 1700s but because a portion of the land where the town laid out was previously owned by Alexander Parker, his heirs fought for the town to be named as Parkersburg; this was granted in 1810. It was first chartered in 1820 by the Virginia General Assembly then, in 1860, was rechartered as a city.

Old as Parkersburg is, the city has its fair share of historical sites – including the Blennerhassett Island. Several museums also trace the city’s history or preserve the artifacts – some of these are the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History, Sumnerite African-American History Museum, and the Henry Cooper Log Cabin Museum. Parks in the city include the Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park, Fort Boreman Historical Park, Southwood Park, and Johnson T. Janes Park.
