The city is the home of the University of Parma, one of the oldest universities in the world. Parma is divided into two parts by the little stream with the same name and takes its name from the roman round shield called Parma. There are many sights for you to see while in Parma, such as the Romanesque Cathedral, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Steccata, the Benedictine Monastery of San Paolo, the Gothic church of San Francesco del Prato, the Palace of Palazzo della Pilotta, that houses the Academy of Fine Arts, the Palatine Library, the National Gallery, the Archaeological Museum, the Bodoni Museum and the Farnese Theatre. The Ducal Palace, built from 1561, was turned into a French-style garden in 1749. The Palace of Palazzo del Comune, built in 1627and the Ospedale Vecchio which is now home to the State Archives and to the Communal Library. There are also places that you may go to for a stroll or just to relax like the Orto Botanico di Parma which is a botanical garden; and the Cittadella, a large fortress built in the 16th century or the Teatro Regio, that has a neo-classical facade and a porch with double window and is the city's opera house.
