It is situated in the east coast of the gulf of Thailand and is a self-governing municipal area. It is the center of the Pattaya-Chonburi Metropolitan Area and has an estimated population of approximately 104,000 inhabitants.
The name of the city was derived from the march of Phraya Tak and his army Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi. Historical records show that during the march of the army, they met their enemies in the Thap Phraya or the Army of the Phraya. This was historical as the enemies of the land surrendered without a fight due to their admiration of the discipline of the army of Phraya Tak.
The city like all other towns of the early years started as a small fishing port that served local fishermen. Later on, it evolved to become one of the popular destinations of tourists in the country, and in fact, the city’s main economic activity is tourism. Tourists are attracted to Pattaya not only due to the popularity of its nightlife but also its beaches, which are said to be among the most serene and cleanest beaches in the country. The city is easily accessible by road, rail and air. Means of transportation like buses, taxis, and trains abound Pattaya that make the area easier for travel.
Some of the city’s attractions are the Sir Racha Tiger Zoo, Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden, Million Years Stone Park, Pattaya Crocodile Farm, Pattaya Park Beach Resort, Funny Land Amusement Park, Siriporn Orchid Farm and Underworld Pattaya. Some leisure activities that tourists may engage in the city are bungee jumping, motor sports racing, scuba diving, spas and horse riding.
