There is a commercial district along Ocean Highway as well as a residential area between Waccamaw River and the highway. One of the oldest resort areas of the US East Coast, Pawleys Island is on the southern end of the Grand Strand.

Pawleys Island is connected to the mainland via two bridges which are the North and the South Causeway. At its most southern tip, there is a public beach open to all local and international visitors.

There is a local legend on Pawleys Island regarding the appearance of a Gray Man which is allegedly a friendly ghost who warns people about coming hurricanes. Major hurricanes have struck in 1724, twice in 1752, 1822, 1911, 1954 and 1989. In the television series Unsolved Mysteries, many witnesses recounted having seen a Gray Man a few minutes before Hurricane Hugo. One of the witnesses was a husband and wife who had been walking along the beach and saw a man dressed in gray clothes who vanished when they said hi.
