A trip to Peniscola is like a sojourn in the Renaissance Middle Ages. Also called as the “Gibraltar of Valencia,” it consists of fortified quarters that rise out of the sea with the medieval castle of Pope Luna (Benedict XIII), watchtower, gates and city walls. It also has an Artillery Store which has been turned into a botanical garden of Peniscola’s native species. Other must-see historic sites are the Saint Peter and Dark Gates, Fountain’s Wall, Bufador, Les Escaseres Square and Saint Anne's Chapel.
A truly spectacular view of the coast and the mountains can be seen at the highest peak of the Sierra de Irta Nature Reserve. This 12,000-hectare protected area not only boasts of its mountains, coves, beaches and cliffs but also its historic significance as it is also the home of the Knights Templar castles of Xivert and Pulpis, and the 17th century chapels of Saint Antoni Abad and Saint Lucia.
Some of the interesting things to do in Peniscola include riding on the Tourist Train, tasting local dishes including the medieval dish called Pope Luna’s Tisane, enjoying the beaches of the Mediterranean where water activities are offered and cruising out to sea to the 2,000-hectare nature reserve of the nearby Columbretes Islands. Other places to visit in Pensicola also include the La Casa del Ayer, Maritime Museum and Casa de las Pechinas.
The best time to visit Peniscola is in June in time for the festival Peniscola Magic Summer, where magic, witchcraft, palm reading, endless nights and gastronomic delights await tourists.
