In the late nineteenth century, Girard made up the majority of the current downtown Phenix City while Phenix City was located mostly in Lee County. In the early twentieth century, the two towns consolidated into becoming the present Phenix City as the county lines were redrawn to account for population shifts that are involved in the Auburn University expansion and opening.
