or Phuket accommodation? Phuket, also Tha-Laang, is one of the southern provinces of Thailand. It is around the size of Singapore and is known for its tourism industry. Phuket City serves as the capital of Phuket Province. A 2007 census determined that Phuket City has an estimated population of over 75,000 people. The province has a population of over 321,000. The region is perhaps most infamous for the 2004 Tsunami, which killed thousands of people.
In its past, Phuket served as a major trading post for Chinese and other Asian merchants. Trade continued to become an important part of Phuket’s economy well into the 17th century when English, Dutch, and French traders competed for trade in the region. By the later part of the 20th century, Phuket became more known for its tourism and resorts than it was a trading province.
The island of Phuket as well as several other coastal regions in Thailand suffered damage from a Tsunami that hit on December 26, 2004. The wave killed over 5,300 people throughout Thailand and as many as 250 people in Phuket, including foreign tourists, were killed. By February of the following year, most of the damage has been repaired and some of the businesses were up and running again.
The region is served by the Phuket International Airport, which is located in the northern part of the island. Songthaews are a common mode of public transport in Phuket.
