or Porto Alegre accommodation? Porto Alegre, the largest city in southern Brazil, is the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The city is located along the Guaiba River at the junction of five rivers, and has become an important alluvial port as well as one of the chief industrial and commercial centers in Brazil.
The Parque da Redencao in the south east of the city is a nice place to relax. On Sunday mornings there is a large market/fair in the park, called the Brique da Redencao. Cultural centers, museums, history benchmarks and the cathedral area all worthwhile. Go to the 75km Guaíba Lake shoreline and see the sunset as it blankets the city with golden lights. In the lake a very vast body of water and a maze of islands facing the city create an archipelago where a unique ecosystem makes possible an exuberant wildlife and its topography is punctuated by 40 hills. Go on Boat Tours via the River and get a view of the city, other resorts and small islands. Visit the Centro Cultural Usina do Gasômetro and Casa de Cultura Mário Quintana Rua dos Andradas for a cultural insight of Porto Alegre. Picnic or take walk in the Farroupilha Park, Botanical Garden and Moinhos de Vento Park or hike into the Morro do Osso (Osso Hill) and Morro São Pedro (São Pedro Hill).
Various festivals are held in Porto Alegre. The Ockoberfest held on weekends in October also there is Festa de Verao on weekends during Jan & Feb and Festa do Folkore on weekend in July. All the events are held in the Parque do Imigrante which also features a historic village from the turn of the century. The Gramado Film Festival (Festival de Gramado) and the Porto Alegre Carnaval Comanches and Guaianazes are two must attend events. The main festivals are Semana Farroupilha features traditional local folk dancing and singing, while the highlight of Festa de Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes is a procession of fishing boats.
