or Porto Santo accommodation? Porto Santo is an island, off the coast of Portugal, about fifty kilometers to the northeast of Madeira. In fact, it is the furthest north, and east, of the islands that make up the Madeira archipelago, and is small, with a population of just about four and a half thousand people, and being only around nine kilometers from end to end. Like the island of Madeira, Porto Santo has a thriving tourist trade, and this is further enhanced by the nine kilometers of sandy beaches that it has to offer. There is also a golf course, an equestrian centre and tennis courts. As far as history goes, the island does have a museum, and there are several historic buildings. What most visitors do see however, regardless of their interest in history, is the house where Christopher Columbus, the world famous explorer and founder of the New World, America, lived. It was on this island, in fact, that Columbus married, and there are frequent exhibits devoted to his life on the island.
