The city has been called many names including ‘the mother of all cities’ and ‘the city of a hundred spires’. It is on the banks of the River Vltava and has been an important cultural and political center for the Czech Republic.
The city was founded in the 8th century and over its history it has served as the seat of the Holy Roman Empire and two of its Emperors. Prior to its official founding, however, there is evidence that Prague was settled in during the Paleolithic Age and around 200 BC, the Celts also settled towards the southern edge of the city. The city was also a seat for kings under the Bohemia rule. The extensive history associated with Prague and the various historical sites found in the area has caused Prague’s city center to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Prague has a very diverse economy. It is also one of the most important cultural centers in the Czech Republic and is one of the top tourist destinations of the European Union. The city has also served as a popular filming destination, mainly for Hollywood films.
Each year Prague is visited by millions of local and foreign tourists. Some of the top destinations in the city include the National Theatre, the Estate Theatre, the National Museum, the Jewish Museum in Prague, Wenceslas Square, and more.
