or Prairie du Chien accommodation? Prairie du Chien is a city that also serves as the county seat of Crawford County, Wisconsin. The city got its name from the French visitors who found the area occupied by a group of Fox Indians who were led by Alim, meaning “dog” or “Chien” in French. Thus, the French explorers dubbed the location “Prairie du Chien,” which is French for “Dog Prairie”.
The city is best known for its history where the area has played a part during the French and Indian War. Incidentally, much of the historic sites are still standing, five of which are already listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The city’s origins begin in the 24-acre Feriole Island, located east of the Mississippi River. While this island is known for its diverse wildlife and scenic beaches, grasslands and forests, it is also the site of some historic events in the Prairie du Chien. The island is the site of the Battle of Prairie du Chien during the 1812 War and of the signing of three Indian treaties. It is also home to the Villa Louis Historic Site, a 1840’s Victorian estate owned by a fur trader named Hercules Dousman, which was the first state historic site of Wisconsin.
Other places which can reveal the city’s past are the Prairie du Chien Museum at Fort Crawford, Fort Crawford Medical Museum, and Fur Trade Museum. Also included as places of interest in the city are the 1800’s Jail, Effigy Mounds National Monument, Wyalusing State Park, and Brisbois House.
Other than the annual festivals Prairie Dog Blues Festival and Prairie Villa Rendezvous, Praire de Chien is also host to the Great Annual Bicycle Adventure Along the Wisconsin River (GRABAAWR). This 500-mile bicycle tour begins from Eagle River and ends in the city.
