In the town lies the world renowned Gateway to Heaven, known as the Swargadwar where the cremation of all famous Oriya persons occurs. Other important temples include Sunara Gaurang Temple, Mausima Temple and the Shree Gundicha Temple Destination of Rath Yatra.

Balighai Beach, 8 km from Puri is a great picnic spot at the mouth of the river Nuanai. The Satapada Dolphin Sanctuary outside the town is an intriguing place to visit. The city’s nightlife is very intense as numerous bars, clubs and restaurants come alive after sunset. For those who are health conscious, Shyama restaurant, opposite the Jagannath temple, offers delicious vegetarian meals. Puri has many colorful festivals such as the Rath Yatra in June and the Nava Kalebara held once every 12- 19 years based on the Hindu calendar. The events are held in honor of Lord Jagannath, the reigning deity. Back on the coast, the Puri Beach festival which attracts a lot of young people, is celebrated annually in November and features Orissan craft, cuisine and cultural evenings.
