The town is characterized by pristine white sand beaches decked with beautiful palm trees and a host of natural attractions to make a holiday there quite enjoyable. Activities here include snorkeling, scuba diving, bike riding, horse back riding, hiking, deep-sea fishing, boat tours, and scenic flights. Squash and tennis are the main sporting games here. For amusement and entertainment the town has a number of restaurants, dancing shows, and island shows. There is a scenic cross island walk connecting the south of the island to the Avativ valley. A hike to the Raeman mountain area is recommended. A grand time can be had at the Wigmore Falls and Arai te Tongo which is an ancient marae. The seas here have many ship wrecks to explore and some fine caves. The Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve is the longest continously operating Marine Reserve in Rarotonga and is home to a wide variety of fish. Snorkeling equipment, lessons and guided snorkeling tours are available here as long as you are a guest of the Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa. Rorotonga, being a collapsed volcano, has many small peaks, waterfalls, mini sanctuaries and is a major wildlife habitat.
Maire Nui Gardens is the island’s amazing botanical garden where you can sample the exotic fruits from the island, admire rare species of flowers, and sample the homemade quiche and focacci and pineapple fruitcake from the café in the vicinity. You can also check out an exciting game of rugby at the National Stadium. The many churches on the island offer a warm and pleasant welcome to anyone wishing to join in their services. Events include the Rarotonga Gospel Day in July, Te Maeva Nui Cultural festival also in the same month and Miss Tiare pageant which promises a lot of fun.
The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa with the Aroa Beach & Marine Reserve is one of the island’s main tourist accommodations.
