Although the first settlements and villages in the city were privately held, when the U.S. Army purchased lot (1660 square kilometers) in the area which is equivalent to half the size of Rhode Island, many of the former residents were displaced. Soon, the city became a closed city controlled by the army – with the residents provided with housing facilities and services but are generally leading a restricted life.

The shutdown of the nuclear site and the privatization of the real estate changed the once restricted city into an open one – after an extensive environmental cleanup, that is.

Today, the Columbia River Exhibition of History, Science, and Technology (CREHST) museum features nuclear technology exhibits. The city also became an important tourist destination with popular attractions such as the Badger Mountain Centennial Preserve, Arid Lands Ecology Reserve, Hanford Reach National Monument, and several wineries with wine-tasting rooms.
