Since the railroad closed the line into Rothbury in 1952, there are no trains into Rothbury, although there is a bus service, so reaching the village from elsewhere in England is possible. The town was founded around a church, in around 1100AD, and while nothing else remains of the town from that time, the church cross still exists. With the National Park on its doorstep, Rothbury is popular with walking enthusiasts, although it does also draw visitors who want to see Craigside, the Victorian mansion, and for its historic centre, as well as for the golf course that lies on the banks of the river.
