Rottweil is situated between Swabian Alb hills and the Black Forest. The town was founded by the Romans 73 AD and was called Arae Flaviae; Rottweil became a Royal Court and a Ducal before 771 and during the Middle Ages it turned a Free Imperial City in 1268. The old town is known for its Carnival which is is the pre-Lenten carnival in Alemannic folklore held on January 6th and the Medieval Center.
The main attraction in the city is the late Roman and Gothic-era Münster Heiliges Kreuz, which is Minster of the Holy Cross, re-built a church that existed from 1270. It sports a crucifix by Veit Stoss and remarkable Gothic sculptures. Other attractions include Kapellenkirche, a Gothic church with three statue decorated portals and a tower; and Lorenzkapelle also known as the Church of St. Lawrence which was built in the late Gothic style. It is home to over 200 works by Swabian masters and Gothic altarpieces from centuries ago.
Another attraction is the Municipal Museum which has a famous mosaic with the legend of Orpheus. There is also the 15th century Gothic Town Hall and the St. Pelagius which is a Roman church that was bulit in the 12th century.
