Historically, original settlers were New England Yankees. They arrived and lived in the island around 1770. It was already the capital of Vermont in 1784 and even the home of the oldest newspaper company named “Rutland Daily Herald”. The place was used as an outpost with its military road built by Sir Jeffrey Amherst, a British General, during the American Revolution. It was in 1847, that the village was incorporated as a town. Roads were constructed and marble quarrying eventually boomed into a healthy business.

Rutland is a home for the Vermont Marble Exhibit, showcasing more than 100 kinds of granite and marbles. These items are kept at the Proctor only a few miles away from the Norman Rockwell Museum.
