Worthy of your time are the two large squares (Praça da Sé and the Terreiro de Jesus) in the centre of the Cidade Alta (the part of town up on the cliff) that connected at the corner by the cathedral. The Museu Afro-Brasileiro documents the slave trade and subsequent development of the city. The Mercado Modelo is the city's main market, has crafts and other souvenirs, and has an adjacent square where you can often see young men performing capoeira (the famous martial arts dance which originates from the area. Also, there's Igreja do Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, which is a small church but one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in all of Brazil. Abaeté Park is a protected state park around the lake with same name with an entertainment area featuring bars and live music. Finally, there's Solar do Unhão -- an old style house located at the Baía de Todos os Santos, with a small museum (Museu de Arte Moderna) inside. It's the best place in Salvador to watch the sunset.
