There he erected the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, which is an important hospital and medical research centre in the town today. There is also the shrine of Padre Pio which is the second most visited catholic centre in the world. There lies the peaceful resting place of the saint. Padre Pio's cell, confessional and crucifix are also housed in the temple. The saint was a famous monk noted for his kind deeds, miracles he is said to have performed and hi influential role as a monk in the mid 1900s.
The Santa Maria delle Grazie is another important attraction, erected to facilitate the many pilgrims visiting San Giovanni Rotondo. The Padre Pio Pilgrimage Church behind this building boasts fine modern architecture. The Sanctuary of Micahel the Archangel lies in the city and is said to have been consecrated by the archangel himself. The Civic Museum in Apulia should be visited as it highlights important exhibits on the region’s archaeology and ethnography.
While visiting the town, you can indulge in local Italian cuisines and a few international dishes made just to accommodate the town’s many visitors. There is a local market where fresh produce are available and most activities and tours are found within hotels.
