Economic growth in the area was spurred with the arrival of the San Francisco and North Pacific Railroad in 1884, along with the establishment of the Dominican University.

There are museums around the town, namely the Art works Downtown, the Sheldon Doing Warehouse Museum and the Marin Poetry Center. Cultural shows are performed every year by local groups such as Marin Ballet. Other attractions include the Saint Raphael Church, one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city.

Despite being a small city, San Rafael has had a major part in the US film industry. Movies such as Gattaca and American Grafitti, directed by George Lucas, were filmed in town. The city once became the thriving community of video game developers, animation film makers, as well as home to several studios partly due to the influence of George Lucas, who headquartered LucasArts there prior to its move to San Francisco in 2005.
