The city was officially formed in 1877, and Mellonville was incorporated after six years. A few years later, South Florida Railroad was begun with a terminus in the city. Sanford sits on Seminole County with Sanford as the county seat.

Sanford boasts of a large number of parks, among them Fort Mellon, George Starke Park, Groveview Park, McKibbin Park, among others. Other parks include Bentley-Wilson Park and Magnolia Avenue Park.
