or Santillana del Mar accommodation? The town of Santillana del Mar is known as the town of three lies. This is because it is not a saint, nor is it flat, and it is not near the sea. There is more to this little town in Cantabria, Spain, than meets the eye though. In fact, visiting this little town is a little like taking a trip back in time. The town is literally covered with historic buildings from a variety of eras, mostly immaculately preserved, and just walking the streets can keep you busy for days. There is also a reason behind the name. That is that the town was named for Santa Illana, or Santa Juliana, rather than for the sea. The remains of that saint remain in the town, at the Church of the Collegiate in the town. This building too is worth visiting, if only for the amazing Romanesque architecture of the former Benedictine abbey.
