Schwerin Castle is the city’s main landmark. It is majestically located on one of the lake islands and today is the seat for the state of parliament. The 13th century Scwerin Cathedral boasts fine Brick-Gothic style architecture. The Old Garden square is an attractive historical site with ancient buildings such as the 18th-century Altes Palais, the neoclassical Staatliches Museum Schwerin from the 1800s and the Staatstheater which is the city theatre also built in the 1800s. The Staatliches Museum Schwerin Kunstsammlungen is a state of the art museum exhibiting a prized collection of 15th- to 19th-century Dutch and German art, with works by Rembrandt, Cranach the Elder, and Rubens. Art work by Max Liebermann and other modern artists, German medieval collections and 18th century court paintings are also housed here. The Technische Museum is also worth a visit. The 18th century town hall, Saint Nicolai church and the TV Tower almost 500 ft tall are major monumental pieces of Schwerin.

The lakes in Schwerin are excellent for swimming, canoeing, sailing, boating, surfing and diving. Beautiful picnic spots can be found by the lakesides. Back on land, you can indulge in walking, hiking, cycling and horse riding activities around the scenic landscape. There are quite a few nature reserves by the lakes while restaurants, bars and pubs ensure tasty meals can be enjoyed amidst an active nightlife. The Capitol cinema is one of the best in the city and hosts the annual Film Art Festival. Blockbuster movies are shown at Mega Movies while the open air cinema provided a unique element to watching numerous shows and events.
