or Sendai accommodation? Sendai is the largest city, with a population of about 1,000,000 people, and is in the Tohoku region of Japan’s Honshu Island. Sendai is a comfortable and pleasant city and is divided into five districts. It is a very convenient city, being both close to the sea and mountains. Sendai is a very green city, with wide tree-lined avenues, and is known as “Forest City”. Sendai can be reached by plane, train, bus and boat. For getting around Sendai, one can use either the subway or bus. The city centre is compact and is quite comfortable traversed on foot. Some of the places of interest are the Miyagi Museum of Art, Aoba Castle, Osaki Hachiman Shrine, Sendai Mediattheque, Rinno-ji, Sendai Castle Ruins and the Yagiyama Zoo. There are a number of festivals in Sendai, the largest of which is Tanabata. This festival starts with fireworks on 5th August and the festival proper is from 6th August to 8th August. During this festival the streets are decorated with very large paper decorations and there is also a parade. The Mitsukoshi department store has a basement food hall and is an excellent place to sample Sendai’s specialties. Kaki Toku, which has been running since 1927, is one of the areas most renowned oyster restaurants. There are also numerous international and vegetarian restaurants in Sendai. Due to the many universities in and around the city centre, the nightlife in Sendai is excellent for a city its size. Kokubuncho is the main entertainment district and is full of restaurants, izikayas, bars, hostess bars and strip clubs. Wadi Halfa café often has live performances of Indian or African music. The main shopping street is pedestrianised and covered, so it actually feels like a mall, where one can buy anything from silk, pottery, hand made paper, lacquerware and wooden dolls popular throughout the Tohoku region. For budget accommodation there is the Sendai-Dochuan Youth Hostel, the Maple Sendai Youth Hostel, or the Sendai Chitose Youth Hostel. Mid-range includes Holiday Inn Sendai, Hotel Sendai Plaza and Hotelcoms Annex Sendai.
