Along with the rest of Alaska, it once belonged to Russia. Then, William H. Seward fought for the area to be purchased by the United States. Seward was the United States Secretary of State who served both under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. He succeeded in negotiating the price and terms with Russia – leading to the Alaska Purchase. The city was named after him.
Seward is known for being one of the most lucrative fish ports – it ranks 7th – in the United States. Still, the area is also known for its many attractions so that tourism is also an important part of the economy of the city.
