The city of Seymour in Jackson County of Indiana, United States, is well known as the “Crossroads of America” because it is the site where the North/South and East/West railways cross. In fact, all trains passing, going to any direction must stop at the intersection – effectively making the city quite a busy one.
The North/South line already runs through Seymour – which was then the Shields Farm – in the 1840s. When the East/West line was planned in the 1852, land owner Capt. Meedy Shields convinced the surveyor, John Seymour, to put it through the land and the town which will soon be created on the farmlands will be named after him in return. The city is also the site of the First Train Robbery – by the local Reno Gang – ever to be committed in the world.
Today, Seymour remains to be a place where the train lines cross. It has also developed several places of interest over the years – some of these are the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, Southern Indiana Center for the Arts, Shieldstown Covered Bridge, and the Freeman Airfield Museum.
