It was founded by Transylvanian Saxons in the 12th century, and is well known as one of the best preserved, and most beautiful, medieval towns in Europe. Aside from pretty cobbled streets and 16th century buildings, the town was also the home of the infamous Vlad the Impaler, who was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Fans of the horror genre therefore, should enjoy spending some time in the town. In fact, Vlad’s house is just one of the historic buildings that you should consider visiting while in the town. The Citadel, and Citadel Square, which date to the 14th and 16th centuries, are two more must sees in Sighisoara. Clock towers, churches, old houses and other buildings make up the remainder of the historic places, but really, in this town, just walking down nearly any street is a historical experience.
