It is located in the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and is the smallest city-nation in Southeast Asia. The name of the city was from a Malay word that basically meant “Lion-city.”
The city state was occupied by several people during the early years. Proof was even discovered that Portuguese people came to the island nation but it was mostly ignored and remained undeveloped and inhabited only by local fishermen. It was only in 1819 when the British led by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles occupied the territory. The city which used to be a small fishing village served as a trading post center that was set up by the British East India Company in 1819. The city then became a commercial center and one of the main hubs of the British Empire. The city was first incorporated as part of Malaysia but later on seceded and became an independent republic in 1965.
The city nation has one of the flourishing economies of Asia. In fact, it has been named as one of the Four Tigers of Asia. It is the fourth largest Forex trading ground and has one of the busiest ports in the world. The city state remains as one of the top most Asian tourist destinations in the world. It has an annual visitors of 10.2 million in a year. The city is a mix of Arabic, Japanese and Chinese cultures.
