After the 1953 earthquake had destroyed the village, it was rebuilt immediately and there are still remains there today. Skala is very popular to the tourist and is the largest resort in the south of the island. The village’s primary attraction is its long area of exquisite shingle and sand, softly shelving into the ocean, with isolated coves in the bordering area. There is a street 100 yards away from the beach with taverns, shops and streets branching off. On the coast, Potamaki Beach is rich and full of the rare loggerhead turtles, and now the area has been confirmed as a conservation area.
At nights 'turtle watches' are coordinated for those who care to watch the creatures without endangering their lives. Historical sites in Skala include the Roman buildings with adorable mosaics and the Argostoli museum located a mile out of the town has some remainings of the Apollo temple that was discovered in the 7th century BC by archaeologists.
