or Socorro accommodation? The City of Socorro is the county seat of Socorro County, New Mexico, United States. Located at an elevation of 4,579 feet and near the inhospitable desert of Jornada del Muerto (“route of the dead man”), the area was reached by Spanish settlers led by Juan de Oñate in June 1598. Reaching the area, they were met by Piro Indians who gave them food and water – an act that prompted the Spaniards to rename the place as “Socorro” which means “help”.
The city is home to New Mexico Tech, formally the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, which owns and operates several research centers on and off campus. The Very Large Array observatory comprised of 27 independent antennas with a dish diameter of 25 meters is located about 50 miles away from Socorro but its headquarters are located inside the New Mexico Tech campus.
