or Split accommodation? Split is one of the oldest and most historic parts of all Croatia. Found in central Dalmatia, this city on the shores of the Mediterranean is also a jumping-off point for trips to the coast and islands of the Adriatic Sea.
This former ancient Roman is filled with Roman structures and ruins. The foremost contribution by the Roman in Spilt is the Diocletian’s Palace, which forms the core of the city. This colossal building is enclosed by fortified walls and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, it is a tourist site where also found are the mausoleum of Diocletian which is now the Cathedral of St. Duje, the Peristil square, the Temple of Jupiter which became St. John’s Church and two original Egyptian sphinxes. Other Roman ruins can be found in Solin (Roman town of Salona), northeast of Split.
During the summer, the locals flock to the nearby Bacvice Beach which also has an active nightlife. The season is also a great cultural opportunity for the people as it is when they celebrate the Split Summer Festival, a series of music, dance and theater performances like concerts, plays, operas and ballets.
Other things to do in Split include climbing atop the bell tower of the St. Duje Cathedral or the peak of Marjan Hill to have a panoramic view of the city, visit the artistic exhibits at the Ivan Mestrovic Gallery and tour the Archaeological Museum which is the oldest museum in Croatia.
