The city was incorporated in 1845 and was named after General Thomas Sunter, the “Fighting Gamecock” of the American Revolutionary War. Sumter was once a quiet, agricultural community but has now evolved into a bustling industrial city with the opening of the Shaw Air Force Base.

When in Sumter, tourists should not miss visiting the Swan Lake Iris Gardens which is known for being the only public park in the United States with all eight species of swans and 250 varieties of Japanese Iris. It is in this park that the annual Iris Festival is held and the holiday light display, Swan Lake Fantasy of Lights. The Sumter County Gallery of Art also serves as one of the city’s tourist attractions. Sumter is also home to the world’s largest gingko biloba farm at Garnay Industries, Dalzell.
