Be warned however that even though the citizens are English, they do speak a rather difficult to understand dialect, known as Mackem, so you may find yourself at a loss. It is a little known fact that Lewis Carroll, the famous author of Alice in Wonderland and other stories, spent a considerable amount of time in the Sunderland area. In fact, some of his stories, like the Jabberwocky, were written in part in the city. Today, the statue of the Walrus in Mowbray Park commemorates that connection. The Sunderland Empire Theater, itself a historic building, having been opened in 1907, has since been renovated, and hosts several West End shows every year. If you are interested in theater and culture, it is a great place to visit while in Sunderland. Sunderland is also well known for its football team, and fans of the sport will enjoy watching them on their home ground.
