Sundern means ground given away for private usage in Westphalian language and the name is common in the area too. Targeted by joined forces in World War II, numerous structures were damaged in the area but not the main structures in Sundern.
Visit the Sorpe Lake which is mainly used for fishing and boating in the summer and ice skating in the winter. You can visit the area in spring when the ice melts and cause an over spill, making a waterfall over the dam which is awesome to watch and take pictures.
During summer when the dam is being drained, locals and tourist gather around the lake to watch process, but they all have to run at some point because there are still bombs embedded in the dam. During the war all the other dams were destroyed in the bombing except the dam in Sundern.
Sundern has numerous half-wooden houses and castle houses for you to visit, as the city was a trading centre; the Homert nature park was a common retreat for royals and counts, so the country houses are all little mansions with towers and turrets and is also worth a visit as well. You can also go hiking when you are in the area.
