The city forms the most populous portion of the region called the Conejo Valley which includes Thousand Oaks proper, Newbury Park, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village and Oak Park.

The late Ed Mastry who was part of the city council, was a Thousand Oaks lawyer who gained acclaim when he was played by Albert Finney opposite Julia Roberts in the movie Erin Brokovich.
