The place was originally settled in David Boyd and Thomas Martin in 1818 and became a territory of Arkansas. Business started to grow in the area with the establishment of a lumber yard by Daniel and Thomas Phillips. The city was named after Secretary of State Martin Van Buren.

The city is home to the King Opera House, a Victoria-style opera hall located in the historic downtown area. The Crawford County Courthouse is another historical attraction located at the south end of the downtown district. To the left of this building is the Old Frisco Station which used to be a station on the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway. The station once appeared in the movie Biloxi Blues. Visitors can also avail of historic train tours which begin at the Old Frisco Station and travel through the Arkansas tunnel for an unforgettable 1920s train riding experience.
