The population also balloons during peak tourist seasons. Venice as an independent country was a powerful port city in the Middle Ages and throughout the Renaissance. It was also of very high significance during the Battle of Lepanto and the Crusades.
Recent news of Venice is attributed to its slowly sinking state. The local government as well as that of Italy and several international preservation societies are working to keep the city from sinking. Transportation in Venice is done mainly through its waterways with the use of boats. The canals serves as roads and the rest of the city is a pedestrian area. It is noted as being Europe’s largest urban car-free area.
