The city is the seat of Tulare County and is the oldest permanent settlement between Stockton and Los Angeles. It is also the economic center of Sequoia Valley and is often referred to as the ‘gateway to the Sequoias’. Visalia got its name from Visalia, Kentucky, the ancestral home of Nathaniel Vises, one of the people responsible for surveying the new settlement in the area. Economic growth in the area did not begin until the start of the gold rush along Kern River, which brought gold seekers from all over the country and through the settlement. When their dreams of gold failed to materialize, many gold seekers settled in Visalia for good.
The city is only a short distance away from the tallest mountain range in the US, the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is also the closest large city located near the Sequoia National Park, home to the world’s famous - the giant sequoia trees.
