It neighbours the districts of Hoxter, Kassel, Schwalm-Eder, Marburg-Biedenkopf, Siegen-Wittgenstein and Hochsauerland. The district was created from the Frankenberg and Waldedck districts.
Waldeck-Frankberg is situated in the Sauerland Mountains with elevation of 843 m. Part of the mountain chain runs across from the North-Rhine-Westphalia. There are four artificial lakes created by dams with most popular being Edersee which is the biggest with an area of 12.00km2 used by visitors and locals for water sports. The main river in the district is the Eder, and the Diemel, the smaller river is located in the north of the city.
The district is known for the battle of the Frankish knights and the Saxon tribes, this long history contribute to the many of the town names. The Waldeck-Frankenberg National Park is mainly beech wood; however it holds some of Europe's rarest fauna, including the black stork and black kite amongst others. The park is home to recently released raccoons from America and is definitely worth a visit.
