Before the small village of Watkins Glen in Schuyler County, New York became popular for auto racing, it has already been a tourist destination due to the numerous hiking and camping opportunities offered by the areas surrounding Seneca Lake. The addition of the Watkins Glen International during the 1950s, though, increased the number of visitors coming to the village.
One attraction in Watkins Glen is the Farm Sanctuary, which offers a unique farm tour where guests can interact with animals. Captain Bill’s Seneca Lake Cruises offers tourists a 10-mile lake ride at Lake Seneca complete with a dining and gift shopping experience. Facing Seneca Lake, on the other hand, is Lakewood Vineyards, a winery where guests can enjoy picnic areas and playgrounds, and of course, sample winning wines.
Visitors to Watkins Glen may enjoy exploring the Watkins Glen State Park and its may trails and camping opportunities. There are three trails available for visitor exploration–the Southern Rim, Gorge, and Indian. The Southern Rim and the Gorge trails take trekkers closer to the park’s waterfalls while the Indian trail takes tourists through the woods and near the upper entrance of the park. There also are numerous areas in the park where visitors can camp and picnic. Visitors can also participate in cross-country skiing, fishing, hunting, and hiking. Park facilities also include pavilions, a playground, a gift shop, pool, showers, and dump stations.
Located close to the state park is Watkins Glen International, an auto racing track that attracts visitors from all over New York and nearby areas. Nicknamed “The Glen”, it was the former home of the United States Grand Prix. Today, the track is most famous for being host to several forms of road racing. Some of the major events hosted at Watkins Glen International include the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series, and IRL Indy Car Series.
